CCA's websiteTRUTH DEFINED
A UNM Graduate Student Exhibition | November 11th thru December 11th
In the Spector Ripps Project Space
Truth Defined, an exhibition comprised of photo based works, runs simultaneously with the Society for Photographic Education Southwest Regional Conference held at The School of Arts and Design at Santa Fe Community College. The exhibit is designed as a supplement to the panel discussion, How Photography Fails Us, lead by current UNM graduate students in support of this year's conference theme Photographic Truths and Other Illusions. The panel discussion and exhibit are executed to challenge the role of the photograph as a vessel for truth. Although distinctly different, each of these artists' work hones in on similar themes, primarily the human tendency to perceive the photograph as reality while failing to recognize the subjective nature of the lens. Photographs by The University of New Mexico MFA candidates Stephanie Brunia, Daniel Coburn, Rachel Cox, Lauren Greenwald, Jamie Kovach and Colby Sempek.
Public Opening 6:00-9:00pm November 11th

Our friend Pelham Johnston directed Times New Viking's most recent music video, "No Room to Live." Johnston has been working with TNV for a while now, but this is definitely my favorite video of the bunch. The video is a compilation of over 3,000 drawings from 40 artists, resulting in one crazy animation. Zach's drawings appear from 0:59 to 1:04.

I'm a little late on posting this - but here is a table I made from scrap wood so we could all fit this thanksgiving. It cost me a total of $30 for supplies (+ 30 hours of work).

Just had my first review of grad school. Here is the work I showed followed by my artist statement:
In the 1920s, the American West adopted the cowboy as a regional emblem, capitalizing on the romantic fantasies he tendered. The traditional cowpoke was all but disappearing from the landscape, as the western tourist industry was overtaking cattle herding in profitability. Despite his decline, the cowboy presented the perfect mascot for the perpetual optimism and rugged individualism that has come to typify the West. He is easy to adore, with his rough and tumble mannerisms, adventurous spirit, self-reliance and propensity to burst into song. Although many historians have debunked the myth of the cowboy and his role in the Wild West, the tourist industry, and the tourist, still clings to these invented images. As a result, the cowboy is the perfect marketing tool for both the products of the West, and the idea of the West itself.
By exaggerating the ubiquitous image of this American icon, I am as much making fun of the cowboy as I am using the cowboy’s humor to make fun of myself and the human tendency to want to believe in his persona. This series of photographs is akin to the outlandish stories that a hardened cowpuncher might tell at the expense of a “tenderfoot.” In this case, I, and my viewer, am the gullible greenhorn and the target of the cowboy’s joke. Similarly, Americans are the target of the West’s fictitious imagery and self-promotion. It is the desire to believe these images, whether or not one rationally does, that makes the spin possible. By outrageously embellishing these stories, I am attempting to shake viewers back to reality, exposing the obviously false (albeit charming) face of the American West.

After purchasing a few raffle tickets back in December, my family was lucky enough to win a trip for four on a working freighter, the Herbert C. Jackson, as it ran a loads of coal and taconite across the Great Lakes. I took 1,142 photos. I've done my best to edit them down and will post them here over the next week or so.

This Washington Post article, "
More doctored BP photos come to light," is a little silly. I am by no means a fan of BP, but adjusting the brightness/contrast of a few images for the website is pretty normal, and BP's not claiming it's photojournalism. The "doctored" images:
